Our Non-Profit Partner: Nuzzles & Co

Coffee and…dogs. OK, granted, these two don’t quite go together like peanut butter and jelly, Bogey and Bacall, or hugs and kisses. That said, here at Hugo Coffee Roasters, we think that java and a Havanese, a cappuccino and a corgi, or a latte and a Lhasa Apso are all perfect pairings! That’s just one reason we partner with Nuzzles and Co., an organization committed to protecting animals and fostering connections between pets and people.

We want to take this opportunity to share the story of Nuzzles — its services, its volunteers, and, most of all, its animals. So grab a cuppa and settle in to read all about it!

What Is Nuzzles and Co.? 

Nuzzles and Co. is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) is a no-kill organization and advocacy organization located in Summit County, Utah. Originally called Friends of Animals Utah, it was begun in 1990 by a group of volunteers. Its mission is:

“…to protect animals. To provide a loving, nurturing place where they can get healthy and learn positive behaviors. And then to find loving homes for each one of them.”

Additionally, the organization strives to educate the public about animals’ humane treatment and the many benefits of adopting rescue animals.

How Does the Rescue Process Work?

Nuzzles and Co. use a three-pronged approach to help animals directly. Here is how the process works:

1. Volunteers travel on a weekly basis to area shelters in order to rescue dogs and cats that would likely otherwise be euthanized.
2. The animals are transported to the Rescue Ranch, a 16,000-sq.-ft. residence for medical care and rehabilitation.
3. When the dogs and cats are ready to find their forever homes, they transition to the adoption center.

The business of rescuing animals from shelters is Nuzzles and Co.’s main service; however, several additional programs serve and support animals and humans alike.

A Little More About the Rescue Ranch

Built from the ground up using generously donated materials and the sweat equity of dedicated volunteers, the Rescue Ranch is Nuzzles and Co’s operation’s beating heart. When the rescued animals are brought in, they receive a thorough medical workup that includes:

• Bathing and any necessary grooming
• Treatment for fleas, ticks, and other parasites
• Vaccinations
• Spay/neuter
• Microchipping
• Dental work, if needed

The animals are also given a behavioral assessment to determine what type of socialization and/or training may be required.

Animals stay at the Rescue Ranch for as long as necessary. Only when they are fully ready to thrive in an adoptive home environment, do they move on.

Other Animal-Centric Services 

In addition to the rescue and rehabilitation services, Nuzzles and Co. also offers:

1. The Purple Paw Progam fosters domestic abuse survivors’ pets as they leave their abusers and build a new life for themselves and their families.
2. The Community Clinic offers low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination services.
3. The Best Behavior K9 Training offers both group and one-on-one training from a certified behavioral trainer.
4. The Rez Rescue Program sends mobile vaccination and spay/neuter clinics to Native American reservations, where animal services are few and far between. They also provide a pet food pantry!
